Tips and tricks for using Avanti shoes by David Nicholls
TFP technical Director David Nicholls has offered some tips and tricks about getting the best when fitting the Avanti range of horseshoes.
‘The Avanti horseshoe has been specifically designed to reduce the leverage around the whole shoe on its ground surface.
The heels have a slight slope on them allowing the hoof to make a gentle arrival onto the ground and rolling up to stand on the inner rails of the shoe.
As the foot leaves the ground, it rolls off the inner rails to leave the ground with the minimum resistance and leverage. This reduces the strain on both joints and soft tissue of the distal limb, reducing the risk of injury so often plaguing equine athletes.
I used to think this shoe was just used for lame horses, however my thought process led me to believe that if I applied these shoes prior to equine patients developed lameness issues, maybe they wouldn’t develop them. So far this has been a proven concept preventing lameness occurring in the horses wearing these shoes.
The Avanti shoes appear different to other offerings and have to be applied with some small differences to other shoes. The concept is to reduce leverage so, using nails that have larger heads eliminated the benefits of the shoes.
My personal preference is to use ASV plate nails in the smaller shoes and either a City Head Delta 5 slim or Mustad Concave nails down one size smaller than I would usually use to nail that size of shoe.
All these nails will set down below the rail height and not reducing the leverage reduction. I also use the spiked end of my buffer to set the nails down into the fullering and I also have a broken buffer I have modified for this purpose.’
Thank you David for sharing these tips.
