“There are times when you wish you had done something else!”
TFP Farrier David Nicholls offers some reflection about a job that he recently attended.
“There are times when you wish you had done something else!”
This horse has been in various types of shoe/pad systems without improving his soundness. He has been under veterinary care and multiple treatments to allow him to have a comfortable retirement and reducing the hock discomfort he has been suffering from.
He started wall kicking smashing off his shoes until I decided to put him into a pair of Freedom shoes on his hind feet. Not expecting the shoes to still be there in six weeks, I returned to find not only were the shoes still on his soundness had dramatically improved , making re-shoeing his hind feet much easier for both of us.
Following re-application of the Freedom shoes, I noticed he was standing with his heels off the ground, resting on the front half of the shoes. Not wanting to remove the shoes and apply a graduated pad of heel wedge, I used some Vettec Superfast to form a raised heel on the shoes and giving me the opportunity to increase or decrease the height. He immediately improved in both gait and soundness. ”
Thank you David for sharing your thoughts.
