BFBA (Sussex Branch) & TFP ‘Joint Farrier Conference’

We had an eclectic mix of professionals from the world of farriery including Sam Head DipWCF, Ed Lyall BVetMed CertEM (StudMed) MRCVS, Marc Jerram BSc (Hons) AWCF, Clive Meers-Rainger RSS and our very own David Nicholls AWCF.

They covered a wide range of subject from bar shoe fitting (Sam Head) to Veterinary Diagnosis and Treatments for Hind Limb Lameness (Ed Lyall).

Mustad Event

TFP were delighted to have Grant Moon from Mustad put on a event for us. This event helped raise money for the BFBA and The Farriers Foundation

Grant was doing his talk on ‘Shoeing in the normal zone’. As well as talking about controlling hoof distortions, why we us additions to shoes and some shoe making demonstrations.

Dr Simon Curtis at TFP

TFP hosted Dr Simon Curtis on Friday who spent a full day with us, and other local farriers talking about not only talking about his new book The Hoof The Horse but many other subjects.

This included how to eradicate club feet, hoof cracks and lesions, methods of hoof repair and attaching shoes with acrylics.

Simon has many years of farriery experience and was awarded his doctorate in 2017.

The event ending with Simon signing his new book for farriers who purchased a copy while he was here. His new book is available to buy from our shop The Hoof The Horse by Simon Curtis

Dallmer Day 11/05/16

Andras (Left) and Charlotte (Center) from Dallmer came over from Germany to teach a select group of local farriers about all of the Dallmer products.

First was talking about foal hoof problems and this was followed by hands on experience in the afternoon using the full range Dallmer products and applying them to the hoof.

Fire Training 22/04/16

TFP doesn’t just focus on the horseshoe making and the training side of running a farrier business. We also look at other skills that will be useful not just in the forge but outside of your job as well.

This is why we teamed up with Fire Risk UK Ltd to teach local farriers and members of staff from other small local businesses how to deal with fires.

Hoof Mapping at TFP 7/04/16

Total Foot Protection hosted the BYS Swedish Farrier School for a day of training about Hoof Mapping.

From the feedback we received it was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

Two Heads 13/11/15

A well attended event was held at Total Foot Protection Ltd (TFP) on Friday 13th Nov with Mac Head FWCF and Sam Head DipWCF from MNC Ltd http://www.horseshoes.co.uk/ who have over 75 years of horse shoeing experience between them.

The opening talk by Mac titled ‘Ramblings of a worn out Horseshoer’ was interesting and had the audience captivated and especially with the great photos of Mac career so far.
Then Sam delivered two presentations on pre shoeing assessments and the importance of walking and trotting the horse up and down before trimming and shoeing.

After the well known TFP lunch Sam did a practical demonstration of how to adjust the Vulcan Bar shoe and demonstrated how easy this is if you follow a couple of basic principles, which was followed by some of the delegates trying this out under Sams tutorship.

Modern Materials 14/11/2014

TFP hosted a modern materials event on the 14th November. This event was hosted by farriers for farriers which is a wonderful way to run an event.

We had David Nicholls AWCF, Mr David Mitchell FWCF, Mr Clive Meers-Rainger RSS BII, Mr Grant Laing DipWCF and Mr Stuart Packham DipWCF.

Back 2 Basics 23/05/2014

Mr Mark Caldwell FWCF presented a full day of lectures and demonstrations into his ground breaking research on the equine foot.

He talked about foot balance, trimming and shoeing protocols, soundness and other topics in depth and towards the end of the day did a real life back of the van case assessment.
