Madgy wins multiple awards at Golden Horseshoe Endurance Ride in Avanti Horseshoes.

Huge congratulations to James Dickinson, who on his horse Madgy, was one of the winners of a gold award while competing in the prestigious Golden Horseshoe Ride.

The Golden Horseshoe Ride is the UK’s oldest competitive endurance ride, which covers 120km in the Exmoor National Park.

To top this achievement Madgy was awarded the accolade of The Exmoor Stag Fleur Award (Best Condition) which was judged by the veterinary panel to be the best capable horse to successfully continue to travel another 40km. This is based on a number of metabolic parameters such as his gait, soundness and his heart rate recovery etc. Madgy covered the first 80km at 12.7 kph with a heart rate of 52 – a supreme equine athlete.

He was re-shod in the second week of June by Mark Spriggs from The Farriery Practice in Sussex at Madgy’s stables – owned by Rosemary Attfield at Hornshill Endurance. Mark has looked after Madgy since he was 4 years old when he was kept at Al Waha Arabian stud near Haslemere – owned by Kathy Etherington. Following that he was purchased by James as a 5 year old. Madgy is shod with the Avanti front shoes and Natural Balance Hinds.

After Leverage Testing the results indicated that Madgy would benefit from the Avanti shoes which were profiled to the lateral side with his stride pattern and foot fall to assist with brake over and to help stop overloading the medial heel of his front feet. The farriery needs of the endurance horse is to make the stride as easy and efficient with minimum possible leverage forces to enable it to cover the distance in the most efficient and fast way. The Avanti is an excellent choice and used by Mark on many of his Arabian endurance horses as it provides an easy solution to provide the bio-mechanical needs of his equine athletes. This shoe lends itself to profiling to the individual needs of each horse and also has excellent wear and durability – essential for long distance endurance sport horses.

Mark is planning to follow up with Madgy and his fellow stable companion Arnie – owned by Katie Bedwin using the Werkman Black gait analysis system (Werkman Hoofcare) which has recently been purchased by Total Foot Protection Ltd to assist members of The Farriery Practice. This analysis will enable Mark to record a baseline measurement, help maintain optimum soundness and hopefully improve the performance of these equine athletes in the future.

Well done, James, Madgy and Mark for this achievement.

Mark examined the natural wear profile of the this left Front Avanti shoe, which indicated that the break over is harder on the lateral toe quarter.
